What disqualifies you from getting an SBA loan?
The most common SBA disqualifiers are practical, not exotic: personal credit below the lender's threshold (most 7(a) lenders want 650+), cash flow that can't comfortably cover the proposed payment, too little time in business, an incomplete document package, and, for acquisitions and startups, no down payment, which typically needs to be around 10%. Eligibility basics matter too: SBA loans go to for-profit U.S. businesses. The frustrating part is that most "disqualified" borrowers were never told why, or that the disqualifier was fixable. Quordx Capital tells you before you apply, and shows you what you *can* get in the meantime.

The Real Reasons SBA Files Get Declined
Credit below the lender's line: The SBA sets no universal minimum, but most 7(a) lenders look for 650+, and smaller 7(a) loans are screened with an SBSS score where 165+ passes. Below those marks, conventional SBA approval becomes unlikely, though thresholds vary by lender, which is why matching matters.
Insufficient cash flow: Lenders read your bank statements and tax returns to confirm revenue covers the payment with margin. Thin or erratic deposits sink otherwise solid files.
Too young a business: 2+ years in business is the strength position. Startups can still qualify, but only with a real business plan, strong personal credit, and roughly 10% down.
Missing down payment: Business acquisitions and startup 7(a) deals typically require about 10% from the borrower. No injection, no deal.
An incomplete package: Missing tax returns, no P&L or balance sheet, or disorganized statements don't formally disqualify you: they just quietly kill momentum until the file dies.
Most of these are temporary states, not verdicts. Six months of cleaner deposits or a few credit-score points often flips a decline to an approval.
If SBA Says No Today
Working capital loans: $5K-$500K with credit accepted from the low 500s and funding in as little as 1-3 business days. Best bridge while you repair the disqualifier.
Equipment financing: collateral-based approval, with rates set by credit, revenue, time in business and the equipment itself. Best when the need is equipment and your credit is the obstacle.
Business lines of credit: $10K-$250K+ for flexibility while you build toward SBA strength. Best for ongoing needs.
A/R financing: advances part of the invoice value up front, underwritten on your customers' credit. Best for B2B firms with receivables.
