What happens if you default on an SBA loan?
If you default on an SBA loan, the lender pursues collection, seizing collateral, enforcing your personal guarantee, and if that falls short, the SBA pays the lender its guaranteed portion and the government then collects from you, including through tools like withholding federal payments. Default doesn't erase the debt; it changes who's chasing it. The real cost of borrowing wrong isn't the rate: it's signing up for payments your cash flow can't carry. That's why Quordx Capital matches borrowers to loans they can actually service, and says no when a deal doesn't fit.

The default sequence, step by step
First comes delinquency: missed payments, late fees, and lender outreach, the stage where workouts and modified payment plans are still very possible. If the loan goes into full default, the lender liquidates collateral and calls the personal guarantee, which most SBA loans require from every owner of 20% or more, meaning personal assets are exposed. The lender then files a claim, and the SBA honors its guarantee to the lender. Your debt now sits with the government, which can refer it to the Treasury for collection. One path out: the SBA's offer-in-compromise process can settle the remaining balance for less in genuine hardship cases. The takeaway at every stage: communicate early. Lenders and the SBA both treat a borrower who calls first very differently from one who goes silent.
Borrowing so this never happens
SBA 7(a) or 504: Long terms and low rates (SBA publishes fixed 504 rates monthly) keep payments small relative to revenue. Best for keeping debt service comfortably coverable.
Business term loans: Fixed payments over 1-5 years make budgeting straightforward. Best for borrowers who want certainty.
Business lines of credit: Draw only what you need, pay interest only on that. Best for avoiding over-borrowing in the first place.
