Can you pay off an SBA loan early?
Yes, you can pay off an SBA loan early, and on most 7(a) loans, doing so saves you interest with no penalty at all. The exceptions matter, though: longer-term 7(a) loans and 504 loans carry prepayment charges in their early years. Paying off the wrong loan at the wrong time can mean writing a penalty check you didn't see coming. Knowing the rules before you sign, and choosing a lender whose terms fit your payoff plans, is exactly the kind of thing Quordx Capital walks borrowers through before submitting anything.

SBA prepayment rules, plainly
For 7(a) loans with terms under 15 years, there's no SBA prepayment penalty: pay it off whenever you like and stop paying interest. For 7(a) loans with terms of 15 years or more, a declining penalty applies during the first three years if you prepay 25% or more of the balance in a year: 5% of the prepaid amount in year one, 3% in year two, 1% in year three. After year three, you're free. 504 loans carry a declining prepayment premium for roughly the first half of the loan's term, tied to the debenture rate: meaningful early, shrinking each year. Because SBA loans amortize, early payoff genuinely reduces total interest: unlike a merchant cash advance, where a fixed factor rate means paying early saves you nothing.
Loans that reward early payoff
SBA 7(a) under 15-year terms: No prepayment penalty, low rates (currently roughly 10.5%-14% variable). Best for borrowers who expect to pay down aggressively.
Business term loans: $10K-$500K+, 1-5 year terms; many lenders allow penalty-free early payoff, and Quordx Capital flags the ones that do. Best for predictable debt you may retire ahead of schedule.
Business lines of credit: Interest accrues only on what you draw, so "early payoff" is built in. Best for short, recurring needs.
