What credit score do you need for an SBA loan?

Most SBA 7(a) lenders look for a personal credit score of 650 or higher, though the SBA itself sets no universal minimum, so the real threshold belongs to each lender. For smaller 7(a) loans, lenders use the SBSS score (a blended business-and-personal measure), where 165+ is the common pass mark. That gap between "SBA rule" and "lender preference" is why borrowers at 620-660 get wildly different answers from different lenders, and why applying to the right one matters more than applying quickly. Quordx Capital matches your actual credit profile to SBA-approved lenders whose thresholds you can clear.

How Credit Is Evaluated on SBA Loans

The lender decides, not the SBA: Because lenders carry part of the risk even with the government guarantee, each sets its own credit policy. Most cluster around 650+; some want 680+; a few will look harder at strong cash flow with scores in the low 600s.

SBSS for smaller loans: For smaller 7(a) requests, lenders screen with the SBSS score, which blends personal credit, business credit, and financials. A 165+ typically passes the screen.

Credit isn't the whole file: Time in business (2+ years is the strength position), revenue that comfortably covers the proposed payment, and a complete document package all move decisions. A 660 with pristine bank statements often beats a 700 with chaotic cash flow.

If you're below the line: Below ~650, conventional SBA approval gets difficult. The honest play is usually a bridge: fund the immediate need through alternative lenders (credit scores from ~500-550 work for revenue-based products), repay cleanly, and re-approach SBA with a stronger file.

Where Your Score Points You

SBA 7(a): at 650+, up to $5M at roughly 10.5%-14% variable today. Best low-cost option for qualifying borrowers.

SBA Express: same credit expectations, up to $500K with a faster SBA response than standard 7(a), though the lender sets the timeline. Best for smaller, faster SBA deals.

Working capital loans: available with scores from the low 500s when revenue is solid. Best as a bridge while your credit improves.

Equipment financing: collateral softens credit requirements; rates run ~7%-20%. Best for asset purchases below SBA thresholds.

How Quordx Capital Works

You apply once, roughly 10 minutes, and our AI weighs your credit, revenue, and time in business against 50+ vetted lenders, including SBA-approved lenders with differing credit appetites. You see 3-7 matches ranked by approval probability before anyone formally underwrites you. Conventional decisions return in 24-48 hours; SBA processes take longer and we say so plainly.

What to Expect

If you're at 650+, expect genuine SBA options. If you're below it, expect a straight answer and a realistic alternative path, not a doomed application that wastes six weeks. Checking your matches is free, and asking doesn't commit you to anything.
