What is the maximum SBA 7(a) loan amount?

The maximum SBA 7(a) loan amount is $5 million. And as of a May 2026 SBA rule taking effect in July 2026, eligible borrowers can combine a 7(a) loan with a 504 loan for up to $10 million in cumulative SBA exposure, a meaningful expansion for larger projects. Knowing the ceiling is only half the question, though; what you can actually qualify for depends on your cash flow. Quordx Capital matches borrowers with SBA-approved lenders from a 50+ lender network who can tell you your real number, not just the program maximum.

How the 7(a) maximum works in practice

The $5M cap is a program limit, not a promise: lenders approve the amount your business's cash flow can service. Underwriting centers on whether historical earnings cover the proposed payment with cushion, plus your credit (most 7(a) lenders look for 650+), time in business (2+ years strengthens approval odds), and the use of funds. Rates scale with loan size: SBA caps variable pricing at Prime + 3.0% for loans over $350K (10.0% at the 7.00% Prime as of October 2026), Prime + 4.5% for $250,001-$350K (11.5%), Prime + 6.0% for $50,001-$250K (13.0%), and Prime + 6.5% at $50K or less (13.5%), so larger 7(a) loans are actually cheaper per dollar. Other program ceilings for context: SBA Express maxes at $500K (with a faster SBA response than standard 7(a), though the lender sets the timeline), SBA microloans at $50K, and the 504 at $5 million (more for certain manufacturing and energy projects) for fixed assets and real estate. The new combined $10M 7(a)+504 pathway suits big projects mixing real estate with working capital or acquisition costs.

SBA options by size

SBA 7(a): Up to $5M, broad uses from working capital to acquisitions. Best for most borrowers seeking maximum SBA dollars with flexibility.

SBA 504: Up to $5 million (more for certain manufacturing and energy projects) for fixed assets and commercial real estate, with fixed rates SBA publishes monthly. Best for property and major equipment; combinable with 7(a) up to $10M total under the 2026 rule.

SBA Express: Up to $500K with a faster SBA response than standard 7(a), though the lender sets the timeline. Best when you need SBA terms at a smaller size, faster.

How Quordx Capital Works

You apply once, roughly 10 minutes, and upload documents digitally: bank statements, business tax returns, and P&L/balance sheet for larger SBA deals. Quordx Capital's matching process identifies the 3-7 SBA-approved and conventional lenders from its 50+ network most likely to approve your size and structure. Initial responses typically arrive within 24-48 hours; SBA funding then follows the program's longer timeline.

What to Expect

Be realistic: a $5M approval requires cash flow that supports a $5M payment, and full SBA underwriting takes weeks, not days. The upside is the cheapest large-scale capital most small businesses can access. Quordx Capital will give you a straight read on what your financials support, including "not yet" if that's the truth, and the entire matching process is free with no obligation.
