Is business loan interest tax deductible?

Yes: interest paid on a business loan is generally tax deductible as an ordinary business expense, provided the borrowed money is used for business purposes and you're legally liable for the debt. That deduction meaningfully lowers the after-tax cost of borrowing: a 10% rate effectively costs less once the interest write-off is applied at your tax rate. Borrowers who ignore this overestimate the cost of good debt and underinvest. Quordx Capital helps you find the lowest pre-tax cost; your CPA confirms the deduction: together that's the real price of capital.

How the deduction works, and where it gets tricky

The basics: interest on term loans, SBA loans, lines of credit, and equipment loans used for business purposes is deductible in the year it's paid, claimed on your business tax return. Principal repayment is never deductible: you're returning borrowed money, not spending it. The nuances worth knowing: funds must actually be used for business (a "business" loan spent personally loses the deduction for that portion); larger businesses can face limits on interest deductibility under federal rules; and merchant cash advances aren't loans at all. They're purchases of future receivables, so their cost isn't "interest" and the tax treatment differs. Equipment buyers should also ask their CPA about depreciation deductions on the asset itself, which stack alongside interest deductions. Quordx Capital is a funding brokerage, not a tax advisor: verify your specific situation with a tax professional.

Financing where deductibility plays a role

Best for general investments.

SBA loans: Low rates (7(a) currently roughly 10.5%-14%) made lower still after the deduction. Best for major, long-term borrowing.

Equipment financing: Interest deductibility plus potential depreciation benefits on the asset. Best for hard purchases: confirm specifics with your CPA.
