What is the difference between secured and unsecured business loans?

The difference between secured and unsecured business loans comes down to collateral: a secured loan is backed by a specific asset the lender can claim if you default, while an unsecured loan is backed by your creditworthiness, and usually a personal guarantee, alone. Secured loans buy you lower rates, larger amounts, and easier approval; unsecured loans buy you speed and keep your assets unpledged. Picking the wrong structure means either overpaying for money or risking an asset you didn't need to risk. Here's a real framework for choosing, and how Quordx Capital shows you both sides priced for your actual profile.

How Each Structure Works, and What It Costs

Secured loans: pledge collateral: equipment, receivables, inventory, or real estate. Because the asset reduces lender risk, pricing improves and credit standards loosen. Equipment financing ($5K-$5M+) is priced on your credit, revenue, time in business and collateral, and the equipment itself secures the deal. Commercial real estate financing ($100K-$10M+) is secured by the property. Invoice factoring advances part of each invoice's value against your receivables. The trade-off is obvious and real: default, and the lender can take the asset. Closing can also take longer when collateral must be valued.

Unsecured loans: pledge no specific asset. Lenders lean on your revenue, credit, and almost always a personal guarantee: your personal promise to repay, which is a legal obligation even though no asset is pre-pledged. Many also file a UCC lien, a blanket claim on business assets. Approval and funding move faster, sometimes 1-3 business days.

The decision framework: if you own a usable asset, the loan is large, and rate matters most, secure it. If you need speed, the amount is modest, or you can't or won't pledge assets: go unsecured and accept the premium.

Both Structures, Brokered Through One Application

Equipment financing ($5K-$5M+): Best secured option when the purchase is the collateral.

Invoice factoring: Best for B2B firms turning receivables into immediate cash.

Unsecured term loans and working capital loans ($5K-$500K+): Best for fast capital without pledging assets.

Business line of credit ($10K-$250K+): Available secured or unsecured; best for revolving needs either way.
