Equipment lease vs equipment loan, which is better?

Here's the short answer: finance (loan) equipment you'll still be using when it's paid off; lease equipment that will be obsolete or worn out before you'd want to own it. An equipment loan builds ownership, the asset is yours once the 24-84 month term ends, while a lease buys you use of the asset with lower payments but, in many structures, nothing to show at the end. Picking wrong either overpays for a machine you never wanted to keep, or leaves you renting forever something you should have owned years ago.

A real framework for deciding

Choose a loan when: the equipment has a long useful life relative to the term (excavators, machining centers, kitchen equipment, trailers); you want to build equity in a resellable asset; and you plan to run it well past payoff. Equipment financing through Quordx Capital's network covers $5K-$5M+, new and used, at rates commonly around 7%-20%, with the machine itself as collateral.

Choose a lease when: the technology turns over fast (certain medical, IT, or diagnostic equipment); cash flow demands the lowest possible monthly payment; or you want defined upgrade points. Understand the lease type, though, a fair-market-value lease returns or buys the asset at market price at term's end, while a $1-buyout lease is functionally a loan in lease clothing and is usually compared directly against loan pricing.

Run the total-cost math: Add up every payment plus any end-of-term buyout, and compare against the loan's total of payments. Leases with low monthlies frequently cost more in total. Tax treatment differs too: financed purchases may qualify for Section 179 expensing while certain lease payments deduct as operating expense, so loop in your tax professional on a large deal.

The tiebreaker: if you'd buy the machine at the end of the lease anyway, you wanted a loan.

The options on the table

Equipment financing: $5K-$5M+, 24-84 month terms, you own it at payoff. Best for long-life assets you intend to keep.

Business lines of credit: $10K-$250K+ revolving. Best companion for maintenance, parts, and short-life tools not worth a term contract.

SBA 504 loans: up to $5.5M for major fixed assets at effective fixed rates typically in the 5-7% range. Best for very large, long-life equipment when timeline allows.
